make it work for work :: fall fashion trends

i love to take risks when it comes to fashion and personal style. not “sheer-blouse-with-just-a-bra-in-the-workplace” risks; more, “this is trendy and may or may not be here to stay” risky. i’ve been sitting on the shopping sidelines lately [check out more about my no-buy august here], and it’s allowed me to take a look at what’s going to be great for fall. i’ve picked a couple of my favorites that are here to stay [camo and leopard, SHOCKING, i know] as well as some new players in the fall trend game.

plaid

i’ll be honest, i don’t ever think plaid goes out of style, especially living in minnesota where “lumberjack chic” is a thing. there’s a way to elevate it, though, that makes it much more work appropriate. you can do a plaid dress with a leather jacket or pair with leopard booties/flats. i also like to pair my plaid tops with “work” pants instead of denim for an elevated look.

camo

coming from the great north where hunting season is as important in my household as, i don’t know … christmas, camo means different things to my husband and i. i have a few camo tops that are basics (tank/tee/long sleeve) and enough camo pants to outfit a very fashionable army, but love to wear it in different ways as well. camo is one of those prints that is easy to pair with others because it has color variants that are still neutral.

leopard

i hesitated even calling this a “trend” because to me, leopard is a staple in my closet. this fall, i’m trying to use leopard in new and unexpected ways, like in my jewelry or pairing with unexpected colors/prints.

racing stripes

i love this fall trend, especially when they’re on the side of a pair of pants. i’m short, so racing stripes are a great way to draw the eye down, elongating my legs. also a fun way to jazz up some pretty standard work-wear and make it go from work-to-weekend, making your clothes work double-duty for you.

joggers

when i used to think joggers, i’d think 1. “ew, jogging” and 2. “basically just dressed-up sweatpants.” no longer is that the case. there are so many joggers out there that work for work, and i am here.for.it. joggers are a great alternative to a traditional work pant, when done right. just be sure not to break the cardinal rule of work joggers: TUCK YOUR SHIRT IN. if you don’t tuck the shirt into the jogger waistband, you are going to look sloppy – like you wore, well, sweatpants to work.

shoulder detail

everywhere i’m going i’m seeing fun shoulder details. it’s a great way to jazz up a fun shirt, dress, or jacket that would otherwise be pretty basic.

i’m feeling very inspired by all the fun fall fashions i’m seeing, so expect more style content in the future! that being said, what do you want to see more of? how to style certain items? workwear? all the latest leopard print pieces i’m finding? let me know! comment here or over on my latest instagram.

So does shoulder detail include shoulder pads?! (As a working woman of the 1980s I can only relate @it happens to the best of us!”

i mean, i’m not going to come out publicly and say i’d wear shoulder pads for the sake of saving face, but yes. shoulder pads included.
