i was chatting with a coworker about the question “can you wear black and brown together?” and wow was this a good example of it is ok to change your mind (lol). if you would have asked me if you can wear black and brown together when i was in high school, i would have told you “H-E-double-hockey-sticks NO.” it took me a long time to be ok with the two colors together, but i assure you that you can wear black and brown together, and here is why AND how:
if you think it looks good, it looks good.
full stop – that’s the MOST important fashion advice i can ever give anyone. if it looks good to you AND you’re comfortable, that’s all that matters. so yes; you can wear black and brown together if you think it looks good.
some of the world’s most beautiful animals are doing it.
leopard, cheetah’s, bears, those cute cows with the long bangs… if it’s in nature, it’s a go for me
it’s classic.
truly, there are few more classic combinations than black and brown (aside from maybe black and white). i say we go for it.
here’s how you do it:
balance and blocking. no, i’m not talking about sports. thinking about how it comes together in a full ‘fit is probably the most important part of this. balance: make sure that you have anywhere from a 50/50 to a 65/35 split of the colors in your outfit. those measurements are V E R Y general of course, but here are two simple ways i would build an outfit:
- pants/top same color, with shoes and a coat/vest/sweater in the other
- color block it – black top, brown pants, black shoes (or the reverse)
honestly, the first rule is the most important. if you think it looks good, then it looks good. wear what makes you feel your best, my friends!
there you have it! you can wear black and brown together
