how to style a denim jacket

over a dress

denim jackets are incredibly versatile in that they can be worn over pretty much any type of dress – from a casual summer sun dress to a custom ball gown to your wedding dress, denim jackets can pair well with anything (if done right!). I highly suggest pairing a custom or embellished denim jacket because it will take your out fit to the next level. when in doubt, pair it with a print (floral/camo/leopard) or a solid color contrasting the wash your jacket is (if you have a light jacket, go with dark colors. if you have a white/lightwashed jacket, go with dark colors).

with denim

now, this one is tricky and not an outfit combo i’ve done often, but if you can pull it off, it can look really chic. you can do one of two things – either pick a wash that’s significantly lighter or darker than your denim (so you don’t wind up looking like britney and justin a la 2000) or pick a denim that’s a completely different color.

with a fancy dress

this one you really can’t go wrong. I love the juxtaposition of something that’s a little distressed with a very fancy, special occasion dress or outfit [think wedding dress, bridesmaid’s dress, ball gown, tulle skirt, etc.]

with joggers or leggings

one of my faves! a denim jacket can dress up a pair of leggings or joggers easily. if you’re like me and spend a lot of time cheering on your favorite teams in a gym or on the field, then a denim jacket is something you HAVE to have. it’s easy to pair with a hoodie or other team shirt. bonus points if you have a custom denim jacket with your team name on it!

with shorts

I know, kind of odd sounding, but hear me out. a denim jacket is the perfect compliment to shorts because it balances out showing the skin of your legs without being too much skin showing. it’s also a nice way to dress up sport shorts if you’re out and about running errands.
