hits of happy: how to make your life a little bit better, all over the place

i love whitney port. i’ve loved her since the hills and i watched her and lauren in the GLAM office/closet they worked out of at teen vogue (i mean, it was *literally* my dream they were living). i wouldn’t say i’m a religious listener of her podcast, but she’s in my queue and when she has interesting guests on, i love to give it a listen. recently she interviewed darcy guttwein, an expert on how to bring the luxury hotel experience into your home.

the thing that struck me most in the podcast are what she called “happiness polka dots.” these are little things, actions, routines, or items in the home that make each person living there happy, content, and fulfilled. it looks different for everyone in the household, but if you are able to figure out what those are for each person, it makes life SO much more enjoyable for those living there. i LOVED this concept and immediately texted joey about what i’m now calling the “hits of happy” in our household. what little things made his day? he’s still thinking about it, but here’s my list so you can get an idea of what i’m talking about and create your own “hits of happy” lists!

  • fresh flowers (need to get back to this! i love picking some up from trader joe’s on my weekend trips)
  • vacuumed floors (the new robot vacuum joey got me for christmas goes a looong way here)
  • cleaned off counters
  • a made bed
  • good smells in each room
  • knowing i have my favorite snacks on hand
  • live plants (i know, mom, don’t laugh)

all really simple, right? but if i acknowledge and honor them, along with the things that make my family happy, i believe it will create a space that everyone feels happy, safe, and loved in — all that i could truly want as one of the leaders of the household.
