my initial review: the beautycounter charcoal face mask

if you’ve seen my instastories recently, you know that i’ve been branching out in my beauty products, specifically with beautycounter. i’ll be sharing a whole post written on why i am starting to use more beautycounter products, but long story short is that my 2020 goals are to clean up my life in a lot of ways, and the products i’m using on my skin is a great place to start. i’ve been researching and learning more about beautycounter and the mission they are on ever since i chatted with jordann over a year ago, so it’s not something i’ve jumped into with haste. to be completely honest, it takes a lot for me to get into beauty, makeup, and skincare products that i can’t buy at a drug store target, but my skin is my biggest organ and i figured it couldn’t hurt to try to treat myself a little better. more on that in the near future, but today’s post is all about the charcoal face mask and my initial review.

it all started years ago (i’m talking, like 5+) when one of my coworkers told me about the glamglow mud mask and how cool it was, so i knew i had to try. of course i went to sephora, spent way too much on a giant jar of it, and the rest is history. no, i ended up using the entire jar, because it was cool how you could see it sucking the crap out of your pores (i’m not sure if there’s a more eloquent way to say that, but it felt as satisfying to write as it did to see the gunk coming out). fast forward to 2019, when i had spent the last year+ seeing the beautycounter charcoal mask being talked about by friends on instagram, bloggers, and all over pinterest [not to mention target carried it for a while]. i, of course, had to have it and was so excited to put this to the test when my package arrived in the mail.

here’s what i love about it:

you can see it working

it has the same “de-gunking” power as the glam glow mask. i had already used it a couple of times before this, but i had specifically not picked two blackheads i found on my face this past weekend (a feat, since i love to pick at my face. i know, i know …) so i could put this to the test. there is nothing more satisfying than seeing blackheads that you KNOW exist being extracted from your pores. seriously. it’s as gratifying as fresh carpet lines after vacuuming. and all the type-A’s gave an amen!

it’s made from safe ingredients

beautycounter is around because there weren’t enough companies producing skincare products with safe ingredients in them, and our skin is extremely absorbent to ingredients, both good and bad. here’s what they have to say about it:

Ten minutes to a purified complexion: this nutrient-rich kaolin clay mask with activated charcoal purifies and balances, absorbing excess oil and drawing out impurities. Salicylic and lactic acids aid in a gentle exfoliation, giving skin a smooth, polished look with a minimized appearance of pores. Perfect for those concerned with congestion and oily skin.

from the beautycounter website

it’s less expensive than the glamglow mask

the beautycounter mask retails for $49, and the glamglow mask retails for $59. i’ll save ten dollars and have a safer product any day.

what i didn’t like:

logan was a little scared and weirded out at first when i walked out of the bathroom with it on. she asked why i painted my face, but eventually came around to it, even touching it 🙂 that’s it! i didn’t like that i scared my child. everything else about the mask i loved.

i take recommendations very seriously, and only recommend things i will continue to use. examples? who what wear picks from target, the halo bassinet, and now the beautycounter counter+ charcoal face mask. in the market for a good, gratifying mask? look no further – i got you, girl.
